Day 1

Written August 13th, 2012 in Williams Lake, BC

Our distance so far.
Today we got off to a slow start; however since we sort of planned to start slow that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I managed to get myself packed ... which is good; otherwise I would be a bit screwed right now. We got everything into the car, even though that took a bit of maneuvering. Laura and Diana said their goodbyes (emotional just to watch!) and then we were off. Well, aside from an oil change in Bellingham.

We were a bit worried that we would get searched at the border crossing, be it randomly or because we had enough space in our car to hide a lot of something illegal. Since it took 4 hours to pack the car, that wouldn't be a very quick detour. However we were lucky and went right through without much whoop de doo.

Our drive also went well without much whoop de doo. The drive from Edmonds to Bellingham always feels long, however once we got past that time went faster and I got into road trip mode, and the nine hours of our trip ended up going by very quickly.

We were a bit surprised by the terrain, because Laura and I both imagine Alaska to be an extension of the northwest, and therefore our entire route there to be along those lines. However we drove through some very dry and scraggly areas, much more similar to Eastern Washington. This does make sense of course, because we crossed the Lillooet mountains (the Cascades), so we were essentially in Eastern Washington. It just surprised us!

Laura and I plan to keep log of how many animals we see, just because we did on our last road trip. Of course there gets to be a point where you see endless amount of some species and a log is no longer feasible -- I definitely wouldn’t mind that happening. Today we only ran into (not literally!) 1 deer.

When we stopped at a rest area, Laura and I got out to stretch our legs and we realized that we’re not as young as we used to be. Well, I suppose that is quite obvious because it has been 5 years since our last road trip. However as we stretched our muscles and I cracked every bone in my body, we realized that our bodies are aging!!! On that note, it’s late and we are both tired, so I should probably stop writing soon so I can actually get this online and get to bed at a reasonable hour.

Goodnight everyone!

PS. We're either staying next to some of those dang hippies or people with pet skunks!
